Phil's office looks out over glorious Northumberland countryside and from there he can contemplate his interests in philosophy and dry-stone walling (as well as reflect, with considerable satisfaction, that he is not in London). He also has a real passion for golf and playing the saxophone - but not simultaneously.
Phil has taught in both state and independent schools and has been a headteacher in both sectors. He enjoys an educational challenge and helped move King Edward's School at Bath from being a single-sex school to co-education, he was the founding headmaster of the very successful Newcastle School for Boys and was a founding director of the West Newcastle Academy Free School, which has a real focus on outdoor learning.
As well as leading the Portal team, he continues to work with a number of students who have a global perspective and wish to consider undergraduate study in the USA and Canada and he loves working in schools running Super Learning Days that give children a chance to be imaginative, innovative and creative.
